What is the ADI qualification?

The Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) qualification is the government standard for professional driving instructors in Great Britain. It involves three separate tests administered by the DVSA.

Once qualified, you can teach learner drivers professionally — either independently or under a franchise. Many ADIs work flexible hours and build a loyal client base in their local area.

The journey to ADI.

ADI Part 1 — Theory4–8 weeks study

A computer-based test covering road procedure, traffic signs, driving test regulations, and instructional techniques. 100 multiple-choice questions + 75 hazard clips.

ADI Part 2 — DrivingVariable prep time

An advanced driving test to a very high standard. Covers all aspects of vehicle control and road knowledge. You must hold a clean driving licence.

ADI Part 3 — Instructional Ability3–6 months training

A 1-hour in-car assessment where an examiner observes you teaching a pupil. Tests your ability to coach, adapt, and manage risk. The most challenging part.

Trainee LicenceOptional — 6 months

While preparing for Part 3, you can apply for a trainee licence to teach paid pupils under supervision. Great for gaining real experience.
